  • Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that motivate or demotivate classroom teachers. In accordance with the nature of the study, it was based on the phenomenological design, a qualitative research design. The data were analyzed through content analysis, a qualitative approach to data analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 19 classroom teachers working for primary schools. The analysis and interviews yielded 63 extrinsic motivators, 19 intrinsic motivators, 82 extrinsic demotivators and 9 intrinsic demotivators. Teachers needed to be supported by a strong and confidence-inspiring administrator so that they could be motivated and thus be successful in what they were supposed to do. The motivators and demotivators were mostly concerned with human relations and human qualities. The classroom teachers working in an area dominated by low socio-economic indicators were observed to need the support of a strong and confidence-inspiring administrator to be motivated. They also required such social experiences as satisfying human relations and a sense of achievement.
