Abstract
Alfred Marshall is known to be the founder of modern “industrial district” concept. The literature on industry location and industrial districts is thought to be shaped mostly by interpreting Marshall’s analysis of external economies of scale. The aim of this study is to examine the Marshallian external economies and industrial district approach which inspires the contemporary spatial studies, and to summarize the presentation of the analysis in economic theory, subsequent to Marshall. In other words, the connection between contemporary spatial approaches and the original analysis of Marshall is put forward. With this aim, firstly Marshallian external economies and industrial districts are outlined, and then contributions of Old Cambridge School are summarized. New trade, new growth and new economic geography approaches are referred within Marshall’s analysis framework. Arising of new industrial districts that is described as revival of Marshall’s analysis and Marshall’s Italian followers are explained.
