Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the developments in autobiography writing in the twentieth century. In this era of rapid changes, autobiography changed a lot in the light of new ideas both quantitatively and qualitatively and gained momentum in the way to become a literary genre. In the first section of the study, it is discussed whether the information given by humans in the before-twentieth-century works bear any significance from autobiographical perspective. Ideas of almost every age are given with some specific examples. In the second section, it is explained that, in the twentieth century where one can easily say ‘I’, autobiography as a more conscious mode of writing developed roughly in three waves and that it contributed much to the literary world. Consequently, it is emphasized that even at the end of the century, autobiography writing continued with the same speed, and despite some changes, people would be inclined to relate their life stories in a literary form.
