The Views Of Geography Teachers on Special Field Competencies (Trabzon Sample)

The research was conducted with a total of 35 geography teachers, including 20 males and 15 females working in 23 different types of secondary schools in Ortahisar/Trabzon. This research was carried out by co-research approach using triangulation method which allows qualitative and quantitative data collection at the same time. Qualitative data of this research was collected from open ended questions related to special field competencies. Quantitative data of this research was collected from “five point likert scale”, including 61 specification consisted of special field competency performances. Quantitative data of this research was analyzed by “SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences)”, “t-test” and “one-way ANOVA” depending on the research variables. Qualitative data of this research was analyzed by content analysis. As a result of this research it was determined that there is no significant difference in the special field competencies of geography teachers in terms of their gender, type of graduation program and professional experience. But it was determined that majority of the teachers attended in the research did not get enough training in their special field competencies during undergraduate education and teachership and teachers resolved their deficiencies in time by the help of their professional experience. Based on findings of the research, it was made to be suggesting about developing the special field competency training.
