Abstract
Rapidly increasing global population uses up our limited natural resources, while such an increase continues to be of great importance for political, military, nutritional and labor reasons.Until the second half of the 1900s, overpopulation was regarded as a necessary aspect especially for national defense. However, it is quality not quantity that matters today. There is observed a relationship between development level of a country and quantity and characteristics of the population along with socioeconomic activities. Present countries implement various policies to sort out overpopulation-induced problems. These policies vary according to economic, political, educational and cultural characteristics of countries. The current study discusses the population policies from 1927 – when the first official census was conducted – to the present in terms of human geography.
