Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the geographical perception of the 1st. grade students in the Department of Primary Education through metaphor. Research population is comprised of 1st grade students of Rize University Education Faculty. Bearing qualitative properties, this research demands from the participants to complete the following sentence: “Geography is like …….., because it is ……..”. Data obtained has been evaluated via content analysis method. According to our findings, 130 students who participated have developed 52 metaphors. These metaphors are gathered in 10 categories. These 4 categories respectively are representing the 75 % of all metaphors: “1. Geography as a guide and pathfinder. 2. Geography as life and life-source. 3. Geography as the coalescence of subsidiary elements. 4.Geography as the place and location you live in. This situation shows that though the students’ geographical knowledge and perception is generally positive, they are very far away from modern geographical perspective.
