An inquiry about secondary school students’ definition of their social environment: The Bagcılar example

The purpose of this survey was to promote the societal and environmental awareness amongst secondary school students at the Bagcilar district in Istanbul. Therefore, they had, starting within the streets and quarters of the Bagcilar district, to inquire the districts` common social, economic and environmental problems and to determine the distribution of these problems among the different quarters within the district. For the sake of the inquiries validity and reliability we organized small trips with small study groups (35 students from 9th, 10th and 11th grades) to the most frequent and dense areas of the district, where they conducted face-to face interviews with the inhabitants. 230 women and 340 men, totaling 570 people, took part in this survey which was conducted in different areas in the Bagcılar district by the students. Dealing with unknown people and starting a dialogue with them, convincing them to take part on the survey and moreover hearing from them about their own problems and the problems of the people had a significant effect for their further development of societal responsibility awareness.
