Abstract
Demands and needs on speed, comfort, and safety bring a diversity on transportation systems. This diversity has been also triggering a great competition between transportation systems, and thus countries increase their investments on this area in order to become advantageous in the competition.Air transportation as being a fundamental transportation system has been increasingly preferred each passing day thanks to its advantages with respect to other transportation methods. This development has become clear not only in international transportation, but also in domestic transportation. As a result of investments made, significant improvements have been observed in air transportation in Turkey especially in the last 20 years, and in this period, the number of airlines serving regularly has increased from 16 to 46. While transportation is conducted by a single company (THY) until mid 1980s, the number has become 17 in 2010, and in parallel to that, huge increases have been observed in the capacity number of aircrafts and seats. These favorable conditions seen in the industry have especially brought great increases in passenger transportation, and while number of total passengers was around 13.5 million in 1990, this number has first passed 100 million with an increase of 654% at the end of 2010.In this study, it is aimed to examine conditions of air transportation with respect to Turkey specifically.
