A qualitative study on teaching geographical features of Turkey with descriptive activities

Abstract
This study was prepared to establish approaches to teaching geographical features of Turkey with descriptive activities. The study surveyed a total of 51 students from a state university in İstanbul. 26 of them were 5th grade students, while the remaining 25 were fourth grade students. To this end, the study made use of the 13th article of a geography teaching program which was prepared by Turkish Education Ministry, as it was relevant to the subject of this study. Participants of the study were then asked open-ended questions prepared by experts regarding this article. At the end of the study, it was observed that the participants produced 39 pieces of poems, stories, pictures, caricatures, riddles and crossword puzzles. The qualitative data accumulated at the end of the study were analyzed through descriptive analysis technique. The analysis indicated that 35,9 percent of the participants focused on pictures and caricatures, 28,2 percent on poetry and 20,5 percent on stories. The other 15,4 percent focused on riddles and crossword puzzles, the study showed. The findings were then interpreted and suggestions were made concerning the issue.
