Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the opinions of Social Sciences teachers about the 6th grades Social Science Programme’s Geography based units which were started to be applied in 1998 in the secondary classes of the primary education.First of all, the new programme has been analyzed in order to better evaluate the Social Sciences Programme and 6th Grades Geography based units. In this evaluation the general condition of the programme, geography based skills, archiving, subject, activity, measurement-evaluation factors have all been tried to make clear. The following questions guided the study in accordance with the model of scanning.1. What is the effect of the new program on teachers’ opinions about teaching? 2. Does the new teaching program include enough subject of geography? 3. Is the content of geography units in the program appropriate to the level of students? 4. Are the geography based achievements in the program clear enough to be correctly understood by all levels of students? 5. Are the new approaches in the system of measurement and evaluation appropriate to the teaching of geography?6. What are the difficult aspects of the constructivist approach encountered in teaching the content of geography? The content of this research is formed by the Social Sciences teachers who work in the primary schools of the Ministry of Education located in Ümraniye and Beşiktaş, İstanbul.The data obtained are evaluated by using frequency and percentage with the help of statistics programme SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Sciences).According to the analysis of research results, the programme is generally successful especially in the changes of subjects and the effects to the progress of the students. The criticisms about geography based units concentrate on the measurement-evaluation methods and the activities which cannot be executed due to material problem and limited class time.
