The Development and Current Condition of the Formal Education in the Province of Kars

Abstract
Located in Kars Erzurum part of the Eastern Anatolian Region, the province of Kars is on Kars Plateau that has an approximate altitude of 2000 meters and is covered in many places with volcanic materials. In the province, where a harsh continental climate is experienced with the impact of the existing topographical conditions, mainly the population and the other human activities are shaped by the intense effects of these geographical factors. The population, which is still somewhere around 300.000 in the province, shows the tendency towards declining as a result of the immigrations outside the province.In the province, where 373 primary schools, 167 middle schools, 46 high schools, 24 higher education institutions, faculties and institutions are located, the formal education activities are maintained with the present 4151 teachers and 870 academic members. In the province, where 88.282 students making up of approximately 30% of the current city population participated in the education activities, 80% of the existing students continue their education in pre-university education institutions and 20% in higher education institutions.The literacy rate is around 93% in the province where the average education level is 6 years. The province that has 8% of its registered populations as university graduates, the general education level increases in province and district centers showing urban characteristics together with the rural areas of settlement that are close to the main roads of transportation. In regard to the general education indications, the province shows below the rate of national and regional averages.
