Abstract
In this study, nomads in Siirt province are discussed from a geographical point of view. The aim of this study is to investigate the mobility of nomadic families in Siirt province and the migration routes they use during this mobility. Excursion, observation and field studies were used as methods. Duderan, Mamediyan, Garisan, Alikan, Soran, Sturkiyan, Keşkoliyan and Silokiyan tribes live in the study area. These nomadic tribes, called Göçer, spend the winter in Siirt; in summer, they climb to highlands in Bitlis, Van, Muş, Şırnak and Hakkâri. In this vertical movement, April-May periods are the time when the mobility begins and the ascent to the highlands takes place. The October-November periods are the months of return to winter areas. Nomads use the three main routes for ascent and descent to the highland. The first route is Eruh, Şırnak, Uludere, Beytüşşebap and Hakkâri. The second and more preferred route to the north is migration to the Eastern Anatolian highlands. This route is located along Siirt, Bitlis River Valley, Rahva Plain, Tatvan, Ahlat, Adilcevaz, Van and Muş highlands. The third migration route is Şirvan-Pervari- Hizan-Bahçesaray-Gürpınar. Nomadism in the region is in danger of disappearing rapidly with the process of modernization and urbanization. As a result, the difficulties encountered during migration and terrorist incidents in the region make it difficult to maintain this lifestyle. In order to maintain this important economic and cultural life, it is necessary to provide economic and social support to nomadic families.
