Abstract
In this study in which the distribution of rural settlement types in Diyarbakır and the geographical analysis of the variables controlling this distribution were aimed, the relationship between rural settlements and variables was examined. For this purpose, the effects of geographical variables affecting the rural settlement type and distribution on rural settlements were investigated. The Logistic Regression (LR) method was used in order to identify these effects. The rural settlements were used as the dependent variable and 8 geographical factors affecting its distribution as independent variables in the analysis. LR analysis was used to determine the effect rates of the variables that impacted the distribution of rural settlement types. Therefore, the distribution mechanism of rural settlements in Diyarbakır was revealed. According to the results, physical and human geography factors were effective in establishing the permanent rural settlements. The distance to the land use, the distance to the village roads, the distance to the streams and the spring waters had the greatest impact on these settlements. In the distribution of temporary rural settlements, on the other hand, physical geography factors played a more dominant role. A high correlation was found between the variables of slope, elevation and distance to streams and temporary rural settlements. Within the framework of these correlations, village and neighborhood settlements from the permanent rural settlements were distributed throughout the province, while mezra settlements were distributed in the mountainous units located in the northeast of the province. Among the temporary rural settlements, the sheep barns and highland settlements were distributed around the Karacadağ plateau and its environs, while the kom settlements were distributed over the southeastern Taurus Mountains, which formed the northern part of the province.
