Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of case study method on academic achievement and retention of the students in learning and to determine their point of views on the case study method. The embedded design method, one of the mixed research methods in which qualitative and quantitative research methods are used together, was used in the study. The study group consisted of 101 (DG = 34, KG1 = 35, KG2 = 32) 10th-grade students receiving education in three different classes of a high school in Bayburt. Natural Disasters Achievement Test (NDAT) was used to determine the academic achievement and retention of students in learning, semi-structured interview forms, and student diaries were used to determine views of the students about the case study teaching method. One-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to analyze the data obtained from NDAT and content analysis method was used in the analysis of the data obtained from the semi-structured interview forms and student diaries. As a result of the study, it was found that the case study method had a positive effect on academic achievement and retention of the students and their opinions about the case study method were found to be positive.
