  • Abstract
Spatial thinking is a skill that consists of spatial concepts, spatial representation tools, and cognitive processes. The present study investigated the questions included within Social Science coursebooks in terms of spatial thinking skills. Descriptive statistics were used in the study and 1943 questions included within the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade Social Sciences coursebooks were content analysed. Spatial Thinking Taxonomy developed by Jo (2007) was used to analyse the questions and descriptive statistics (percentages/frequencies) as well as chi-square tests were used. Subject matter experts were consulted in order to establish the reliability and validity of the study. The results suggested that the questions within the coursebooks mainly consisted of questions which included basic-simple spatial concepts and checked lower cognitive levels without requiring the use of spatial representation tools. Moreover, a significant relationship was observed between grade levels and components of spatial thinking (spatial concepts, representation tools, and cognitive processes).
