The Importance of Production, Storage and Sale Buildings for Olive Oil in Ayvalık History

Ayvalık was the agricultural inner zone of Midilli city state in ancient times. It was destroyed during the invasion of Midilli in 1462. Fortunately the city was rebuilt. Originally, Ayvalık was named as “Kydonias” which meant place of quince trees in Greek. Buildings were constructed in neo-classical style in Ayvalık which developed rapidly after 1856 Tanzimat reforms. Commerce which took place in the branches of production, storing and selling played a crucial role in the construction of factory, storehouse and commerce house functioned building in Ayvalık which became an important city in terms of commerce through to the end of 19th century. These structures are important due to enlightening present and future generations about the lives of the residents in the period which they were built (being a document) alongside dominating city’s silhouette with churches in Ayvalık’s historic fabric today. Buildings with storehouse and commerce house functions are important documents showing the progress of olive oil production which can be dated to B.C. 6th century.Today, the storing buildings are reused as marketplaces, various commerce houses, souvenir shops, food and beverage places and car parks. This course of action provided the protection of olive oil factories which is a part of our cultural heritage. These structures which are our cultural heritage are representatives of a positive sign in urban sustainability with their new functions, in city life and with functions changes.
