Abstract
The period of primary school has a great importance for the physical and psychological development of children. One of the important determining factor for success in education is the planning and organization of outdoor space as an extension and component of education. However, in the overall context of Turkey, educational institutions display a weak approach to the planning and organization of outdoor spaces at school yards which is far from the requirements of the age, through the inadequacy of green areas, environmental design and hard concrete floors which have been designed without consideration of children’s needs. This study has been carried out in order to determine the existing physical condition of 35 primary school yards located at the city center of Trabzon. Outdoor space qualities such as the use of school surrounding area, the adequacy of open and green areas in school yards, the adequacy of land usage for functional and esthetic, outdoor furnishing elements with observation and examined.
