Abstract
In recent years, new structuring is being observed in urban planning parallel to the prominence of technology. Cities are being modeled based on their social texture and with urban regeneration projects; they have been gained variety of identities. In these efforts -where sometimes monotype cities are emerged- cities become misidentified and lose their uniqueness for the reason that environmental components forming the urban texture are not being comprehended correctly. Artvin, with its unique urban structure, is taken as an example in this study and the effects of environmental components on the city’s profile were tried to be investigated. For this purpose, factors of topography, climate, vegetation cover, fauna, geological and geomorphologic status and presence of water were analyzed since they affect the city profile. As a result, it was determined that the natural environment of Artvin has been effective both to increase eigen value of the city in respect to its urban identity and to cause the city to become identified with such names as “land adjacent to the sky”, “city of stairs” and “green Artvin”.
