Abstract
Linda Darling, in a critical reassessment of Mediterranean political discourse at the turn of the sixteenth century, argues that the transformative emergence of stable, centralizing states such as the Mughals, Safavids, and Ottomans corresponded with an outpouring of advice manuals devoted to questions of proper governance and the nature of just rule.
