Abstract
The snake skin is made of a elastic inner layer and a durable and inelastic outer surface. Snakes shed the whole outer layer, which is also known as the stratum corneum, several times a year. This layer, which is also known as shed snake skin, is used in folkloric medicine, cosmetics, and pharmacological studies. The objective of this study is to compare the morphological characteristics of stratum corneum layers of two different snake species living in the same habitat with a scanning electron microscopy and to show that this method can be used in taxonomy. A total of 6 shed snake skin consisting of three of Dolichophis jugularis and three of Malpolon insignitus were included in the study. We determined that there were morphological differences between shed snake skin of two different species, which were examined by scanning electron microscope. In light of the study results, we conclude that the shed snake skin might be used in the taxonomy as an alternative method.
