Abstract
The main aim of this study is to determine the extent to which prospective geography teachers use smart devices (smart phones, tablet PCs etc.) that have increasingly become part of our daily lives every passing day, and the extent to which they use the applications introduced by such smart devices that bring in knowledge and skills about geography. The study was conducted with the participation of 43 prospective geography teachers studying at Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Education and Department of Geography in the period of 2015-2016. A descriptive survey model was used in the study, in which data was collected through a structured interview form, and analyzed by using frequency and percentage counts. The analyzed data has revealed that prospective teachers use smart devices intensively and mostly for using social networking sites and applications as well as watching videos, listening to music and playing games to spend their free time. On the other hand, the use of educational applications on smart devices that provide knowledge and skills about geography remain at very low levels.
