The Relationship Between Residence and University Students/Emotional Home-Making: The Case of Nevşehir, Turkey

The studies about relationship between spaces and society have recently increased due to the cultural turn in geography and spatial turn in social science. In this respect, new subfields within the discipline of geography such as youth geographies, geographies of students, and geographies of higher educations have. Even though some studies have tried to indicate inner life of students as an individual agent, some have focused on the sociality of different student communities. It is worthy of notice that student accommodation such as home, the dorm, the peer sharing room is an important in geography. Homes carry significant material and symbolic value, and house as a material space turn into home as an emotional space over time.This presentation aims to draw attention to accommodation of students in NevsehirHacıBektaş University in retrospective sense, depicting and mapping accommodation. The main goal of this presentation is to hear out the young people in the higher education as a significant actor who has formed homes, and to explore the students’ emotion and thoughts about their homes. Another goal of the presentation is to indicate emotional place-making and how students to organize their home. This presentation employs interview with 20 students from the diverse faculty of university, participant observation and ethnographic method to comprehend how to use the objects in students’ accommodation for feeling at home.
