  • Abstract
Beytüşşebap a district of Şırnak province in the Eastern Anatolia Region, currently has a population of 16427. The aim of this study is to investigate the development of the population in the district of Beytüşşebap in the Republican period and the current demographic structure and educational status of the district population. This study is a descriptive study and the data of TurkStat constitute the most important data sources. The population of Beytüşşebap was 12883 in 1927 and increased to 16134 in 1940. The population of the district began to decline after 1940, in 1945 it fell to 12864; in 1955 to 11539. After 1955 the district population started to increase again. The population of the district increased from 12279 in 1960 to 22409 in 1990. In the last 27 years Beytüşşebap has entered the population reduction process. As a matter of fact, the district population, which was 22409 in 1990, decreased to 16427 in 2017. In Beytüşşebap district, the main reason for the decrease of the population in recent years is the migration towards the outside. While the development graph of the rural population in the district is parallel to the total population, the population development of Beytüşşebap town is different from the other two. When we look at the demographic structure of Beytüşşebap district, it is seen that working population has a very big share in the district population and that the share of the child population is relatively low. While the rate of working age is around 68%, the rates of children and the elderly are about 27% and 5% respectively. The reason for this situation is that the number of soldiers in the district is quite high. Assuming that the number of males in the 20-24 and 25-29 age groups is equal to the number of females in the district population, these rates change and the ratio of 15 + 64 age group decreases to 63%. While the total dependency rate of Beytüşşebap district is around 47%, the young dependency ratio is 40% and the elderly dependency ratio is around 7%. Total dependency and youth dependence rates are low due to the relatively high proportion of the 15-64 age group in the district. The literacy rate is around 93% and this rate is 96% for males and 83% for females. When the education level of the literate population is examined, the ratio of literate and primary school graduates is 53,6% in females; it is 34,6% in males. The percentage of graduates of secondary and higher education institutions is relatively low in women and 46,4 %; in males it is higher and 65,4%.Terrorist acts in the region in the last 40 years negatively affected the educational activities in the district.
