The Effect of Flood Disaster in August 2018 on The Agricultural Areas in Elmali District

Abstract
Mediterranean Coast, where it is one of the flood disaster in Turkey. Sudden downpours in this region lead floods due to unplanned and improper land use. In this study, the impact of the flood disaster on August 8, 2018 on the agricultural areas in Elmalı District was analyzed. In our study, the areas affected by the flood event were investigated. The results show that a field of cropland 50000 m² are affected by this flood disaster. In Elmalı district, which is located in a carstic closed basin, surface water is transferred to the underground through dolines along sides of the polje. In rainy periods, during which the dolines are not sufficient for the transfer of surface water to the underground, pondings occur at the bottom of the polje. Due to this situation, which leaves the agricultural areas and settlements under water, some of the settlements in the district were established on geomorphological units such as alluvial Cole or fan. However, seasonal rivers, which are triggered to flow because of sudden downpours or long-time rains, lead these agricultural areas and settlements to remain under water. Among the reasons for these overflows and flood that are experienced almost every year, along with geomorphological and climactic factors, damages inflicted upon the flora, human factors such as false settlement location choice may also be listed. This also study deals with these subjects. The fact that Elmalı is geomorphologically based on pollen base and the groundwater level is quite high in this area accelerates the sudden flood rains into the flood. In the context of the reduction of damages of the flood disaster measures must be taken in this site by the local government and the related government agencies because flood disaster has the potential to cause the loss of not only agricultural areas but also loss of life and materials as experienced in the previous years.
