Abstract
While globalization rapidly leaves developing countries behind the competition race, it also produces new starting points for these countries. In developed countries, due to increasing income levels demand shifts towards featured or original products. Featured products are products that have different characteristics regarding the geography, climate, culture or production style. The fact that these increasingly demanding products are mostly produced in developing countries tends to open new opportunity windows to these countries through foreign trade in the globalizing world. The geographical indication (GI) system offers manufacturers a new competitive opportunity by protecting such products in the international arena. Lots of study mention that in EU, which GI is widely used, the countries producing products with geographically indicated provides high gains. Although having a rich potential in terms of featured products, Turkey has only three products registered in the EU GI system. As of 2019, there are 467 registered products in the national GI system in Turkey and 7 of these products belong to Denizli province. In this study, potential of GI products in Denizli, which is one of the Turkey’s leading textile exporters, are evaluated in terms of foreign trade. Consequently, registration of these products in international GI system would create a significant potential for both Denizli and Turkey in terms of foreign trade and would support the development of the region through increases in revenues.
