Morphological analysis of urban form: A case study for Denizli

The studies on the spatial and functional components of urban forms highlight that urban forms are shaped by spatial size, land use, transportation system, pattern or textures and also density. Thresholds, land use patterns, transportation system, density data as well as can be used as the main indicators together with historical background and planning experiences in order to analyse the change– transformation process of urban forms and determine its efficiency–effectiveness. The aim of this paper is to examine change–transformation process of urban form of Denizli and to evaluate its efficiency by using indicators of thresholds, land use patterns, transportation system and density in the context of sustainable urban development. The methodological framework of this paper is composed of 4 (four) stages. In the first stage; it is defined the spatial and functional boundaries of the urban form in the context of the development potential and dynamics of Denizli city through field survey and observation works. In the second stage, in the context of conceptual–theoretical background, it is stated the indicators which can be used the determination of the components of urban form and analysing of the efficiency of its. In third stages, it is determined the spatial and functional dynamics of urban form of Denizli by using the analytical maps in the context of historical development process and planning experiences. In the fourth stage, it is examined urban form of Denizli in detailed by using morphological indicators, and evaluate the efficiency or urban form in the context of sustainable urban form debates. In the result of this study, it is stated that the spatial and functional development of urban form of Denizli is shaped by the decisions relating with thresholds, urban land use, transportation system and population density in the context of the historical background and planning experiences. It is considered that this paper has original value in terms of methodological framework that it includes the indicators depending on the collection of conceptual– contextual information and preparation of the analytical maps. In this respect, it is expected that this paper focused on urban form of Denizli contributes to the academic–scientific studies about the efficiency analysis of urban forms and also the urban planning and implementation works in the context of local governments.
