Abstract
Rural tourism is a type of tourism that remains at the intersection of development and tourism. Sustainable tourism criteria are the guides in the development strategy and implementation of rural tourism. In order for a rural settlement to turn into a sustainable rural tourism destination, products and services must be authentic and regionally identifiable, and managed in a planned, projected and organized manner. For this reason, the importance of sustainable approach at the basis of the success factors of rural tourism is great. The purpose of the study is to introduce the holistic approach, which is one of the building blocks of sustainability in rural tourism, with comparisons and comments. For this purpose, the concepts, the criteria and the holistic relations within the scope of sustainable rural tourism were included in the design of the article. Comparative analytical method was used in the construction of all these. The data of the research consist of the institutional and scientific publications, projects and reports. According to the results of the study, full compliance with the sustainable tourism criteria is essential for a successful management of rural tourism. In addition, the holistic approach in all components and relations of rural tourism facilitates sustainability.
