The Use of Family Labor by Gender of Sheep Farms: A Case Study of Isparta Province in Turkey

Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to determine the use of family labor by gender of sheep farms in Isparta province in Turkey. The main material of the study consisted of the data obtained from surveys, which were conducted by face-to face interviews with sheep farms in Isparta province. Neyman Method from among the stratified random sampling methods was used for determining the number of farms to be included in the survey. As a result of this method, the number of farms that for representing the population was calculated as 80. As a result of the research, it was determined that the active family labor was 4.23 persons per farm. 55.03 % of active family labor was male and 44.97 % was female. The average family labor use in farms was 11.99 hours /day. It was determined that 60.80% of used family labor was male and 39.20% was female. When the daily working time of the family labor was examined according to age groups, it is determined that the men and women in the 25-49 age group work more than the other age groups. It was found that the proportion of working time for males and females in this age group were 50.89 % and 59.57 % respectively. Activities that male more interested in farms were grazing (76.94 %), product sale (84.90 %), shearing and bathing (79.76 %), sheep and lamb sale (100.00 %), medication and vaccination (65.08 %). Activities that female more interested in farms were feeding (67.68 %), milking (100.00 %), dairy product make (100.00 %), barn cleaning (56.76 %) and lambing (51.66 %).
