Abstract
Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an important oil and energy crop cultivated in the world thanks to its high and quality oil content in the seeds. Safflower varieties named OLEIN, ZIRKON and SAFIR have been developed by Prof. Dr. Hasan BAYDAR and Assoc. Prof. Sabri ERBAS as a result of an intensive breeding studies that started in 2008 with the combination hybridization of Dinçer 5-18-1 x Montola 2000 varieties and subsequent pedigree selection method at Isparta University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops. Turkey s native and national safflower varieties, was registered by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Variety Registration and Seed Certification Center on April 8, 2019, and finally entitled to enter the Turkish National Variety List. Financial supports were provided within the scope of SDU BAP 2155-D-10, TUBITAK 1001/1110380 and 3001 / 214O211 projects during the breeding process of the three new safflower varieties which have different agricultural and technological characteristics compared to classical safflower varieties.
