  • Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the motivations of postmodern tourists who are the members of “Otostoprail” group which is associated with “Interrail Türkiye”. This study assumes that “Otostoprail” group can be taken into consideration as a postmodern clan and the members of this group as postmodern tourists. This study also searches for the features of “Otostoprail” group, conditions to attend this group, what happens before, after and during the hitchhiking process by a qualitative research design. For this aim, face to face interviews via snowball sampling method were conducted with 19 participants in September and October 2017. Five demographic and six open-ended questions were addressed to participants with the help of semi-structured interview forms. The findings of this study reveal that individuals who were involved in hitchhiking are motivated by such factors as socialization, freedom and self improvement. It is understood that “Otostoprail” (since the features of this group match with the features of postmodern clans) could be defined as a postmodern clan. This study is valuable as it contributes to the literature of postmodern clans and the motivations of the participants of such clans.
