Abstract
Maintaining that social sciences and natural sciences have to use same method, Jevons aimed to establish economics especially like physics and mechanics based on mathematics and described economics as “calculus of pleasure and pain”. His statrting point was Bentham’s pain-pleasure analysis and he showed the dependence of the basis of economics and human mind on physiological laws through psycophysiology and in this regard he described human behavior as “mechanics of self-interest and utility”. His mechanic conceptions of economics and human being had highly influenced in the rise of neoclassical economics. The theoretical structure of neoclassical economics could be seen perhaps most clearly in William Stanley Jevons in this context. The contribution attempted here is to show Jevons’s conception of economics and human within the framework of his scientific approach and shed light on the basis of the conception of human being in neoclassical economics.
