AN INVESTIGATION ON HILMI ZIYA ÜLKEN’S CONCEPT OF HUMANITARIAN PATRIOTISM IN MÜLKIYE MEKTEBI MECMUASI TEXTS (1931-1935)

Hilmi Ziya Ülken, who lived from 1901 to 1974, is a character who has been mentioned for his multidimensional academic intellection in various researches. In this study, his way of approaching to the concept of Humanitarian Patriotism, which he importantly emphasized in his texts published in the first five years of Mülkiye Mektebi Mecmuası. Mülkiye Mektebi Mecmuası was published by Student Council of Mülkiye Mektebi in 1931 and in the study, 35 issues of Mülkiye Mektebi Mecmuası published between 1931 and 1935 were investigated. The study was performed through survey method. It was determined that 18 of the 288 articles reached belong to Ülken and size of these are related to Humanitarian Patriotism. The subject of the study is the conceptual content of Humanitarian Patriotism identified by Ülken and the meaning assigned to the concept. The opinions of Ülken, who added a new dimension to the concept of citizenship, are considered to be important when they are accounted within their periodical circumstances. Consequently, Ülken determines in his texts that there is no foundational difference between patriotism and humanism, these concepts form around nationalism and Western style nationalism is away from this context.
