Abstract
The aim of this study is to estimate the import demand function of Turkey for the period of 2001-2015 by using structural breakdown cointegration analysis and policy proposal based on the estimation results. In this context, we employed Maki (2012) test for cointegration which allows up to five structural breaks. It is observed that Turkey has experienced especially in the second quarter of 2006, the second quarter of 2008, the second quarter of 2011 and the second quarter of 2014 structural breakdown in demand of import. In addition, using OLS, FMOLS, DOLS and CCR methods, the Error Correction Mechanism was predicted to achieve both long-term and short-term import income and price elasticities. The results show that the import demand is affected more from the changes in income than the changes in price. Addition to this the findings of the study show that Turkey s import demand has been experiencing a large number of structural breaks after the 2008 global crisis.
