Abstract
In this study, the relationship between public spending and economic growth in Turkey is examined. For this aim, using the data of the share of public spending in GDP and real GDP per capita for the period 1990-2018, Johansen cointegration test, Granger causality test and Least Squares Method were applied. Johansen cointegration test result shows a cointegration relationship between public spending and economic growth. According to Granger causality test results; it is found there is a one-way causality from government expenditure to economic growth. Moreover, according to the OLS method, the elasticity of economic growth in terms of public spending has a significant and negative value. According to this, public spending has a negative impact on economic growth. Accordingly, the reduction of the weight of the public sector positively affects the economic growth in Turkey.
