THE THESIS OF RELATIVE AUTONOMY OF STATE AND THE 2008 FINANCIAL CRISIS IN THE USA

The study focuses on the state-capitalist class relations in Obama and Trump presidencies to clarify why neoliberalism was not problematized and even deepened due to the 2008 Crisis. It examines the Relative Autonomy of State Thesis and aims to explore its effectiveness to account for the crisis policies of Obama and Trump. To this end, first, the study examines Poulantzas’ Relative Autonomy of the State Thesis argumentatively by utilizing Miliband’s and Domhoff’s analytical frameworks. The study argues that while the capitalist class supported the election campaigns of Obama, Trump is a member of the ruling class. To conclude, the study argues that, due to these close ties, the state failed to behave relatively autonomously while responding to the crisis, and acted as a direct instrument of the capitalist class.
