THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HYDROPOWER ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN SELECTED E7 COUNTRIES

Abstract
In this study, causal relationships between hydropower energy consumption and economic growth were investigated for selected E7 countries over the period 1965-2019. In addition to the Konya panel bootstrap causality method, the newly developed time-varying bootstrap panel causality test was used in the study. According to the bootstrap panel causality method, no causality relationship was found between the two series. According to the time-varying bootstrap panel causality test it was observed that there is a causality relationship between the variables in certain years. Considering these results, 1990-1991 in Brazil; 1986-1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 in Mexico; 2011 and 2013 in Indonesia a bidirectional causality relationship was found. In other words, while the increase in hydropower consumption affects economic growth in these years, the development of economic growth also affects the consumption of hydropower. In other countries, it was observed that there is a unidirectional causality relationship from hydropower consumption to economic growth and from economic growth to hydropower consumption at certain points in time.
