FOOD INSECURITY IN SEASONAL AGRICULTURAL WORKERS

The aims of this study were to determine the food insecurity situation of seasonal agricultural workers and to determine the effect of socio-demographic variables on food security levels. Seasonal agricultural workers (65 households) in Giresun province were interviewed and their food security levels were determined using the US Household Food Security Survey Model (HFSSM). Based on their food security levels, socio-demographic characteristics and food consumption behaviors were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression analysis with proportional odds model. It was found that none of households with or without children had food security and 28.5% of households with children had severe hunger. It was observed that food insecurity risk increases in low-income households seasonal agricultural workers with children and food insecurity status of these households was in a worrying state. Therefore, social and economic supports and special policies are necessary for seasonal agricultural worker households.
