MODERN DEFENSE OF TRADITION: A CRITIQUE OF MODERNITY DISCOURSE

This study includes a defense of tradition on the axis of the claim that there are possibilities to make sense of tradition, which is a reality of the modern world, outside the discourse of modernity. The study focuses on the analysis of different perspectives on the concept of tradition and within this framework, it deals with the “interpretation of the tradition” produced by the discourse of modernity and the alternative perspective developed against this interpretation. The theoretical background that the study benefits from is predominantly based on critical theory. Basing the cause of the radical difference between the tradition itself and its representation in modern world on the Enlightenmentist ground of the ideology of modernity, this study argues that there are possibilities to develop alternative tradition narratives despite the hegemony of the dominant modernity dicourse. With a skeptical approach on the general acceptances of the social sciences about the tradition, “modern defense of tradition” makes the failure of the ideology of modernity on the discursive level visible. By removing the necessity of treating the tradition through the stereotypes of the discourse of modernity, the modern defense of tradition not only expands the possibilities of approaching it on a more realistic ground in today s world, but also deepens our understanding of modernity.
