    INVESTIGATION OF SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC COMPETENCE PERCEPTIONS OF TURKISH TEACHER CANDIDATES

  • Abstract
    This study was conducted in order to determine the perception level of social and academic competence of the students studying in the department of Turkish Language Education and to investigate the relationship between academic achievement grade average of these students and their social and academic competence perceptions. In the study, correlational survey research model was used, and 289 Turkish teacher candidates views were taken. Teacher candidates perceptions of social and academic competence were determined by the Competence Perception Scale for Adolescents scale and a single item. Descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), Pearson correlation coefficient and Wilcoxon signed test were calculated. As a result of the calculations, it is found out that the social and academical competence perceptions of the Turkish teacher candidates are higher than the average level. The social competence perceptions of the female students are higher than the male students’, and the third and fourth-grade students have higher academic competencies than the first and second-grade students. It has been determined that the answers of the students about the perceptions of social and academical competence from the scale and from a single item show a meaningful difference.
