THE EFFECTS OF UNION ACTIVITIES ON SCHOOLS ACCORDING TO VIEWS OF PRİNCİPALS AND TEACHERS

Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the positive and negative effects of the unions on schools according to views of school principals and teachers. The data of the study carried out by the phenomenology design of qualitative research methods, were collected through semi-structured interviews. The study group was selected by the criterion sampling technique from the purposive sampling methods and consisted of 28 teachers and 7 principals working in schools in Istanbul and Kocaeli provinces. As a result of the analyzes conducted, the reasons why the participants become union members were determined as; pressure, belonging need, organization need, personal rights, legal support and political view. The reasons why the participants did not want to join the union are listed as; the ineffectiveness of the unions, their perceived political structuring and the discrimination among the teachers. Besides, it was concluded that trade unionactivities had positive effects on providing legal support to teachers in schools, improving their personal rights and support for school management, and negative effects on unethical behaviors, political polarization among teachers and communication problems.
