    THE ROLE OF BILKENT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN MUSIC LIFE OF TURKEY

  • Abstract
    In this study, the history of the symphony orchestra and tangible and intangible support of Ihsan Dogramaci for the formation of the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and its’ purpose were explained. BSO was established in 1993 as an original art Project of Bilkent University. This is an academic and international art company maintaining their works with the Turkish and foreign artists taking place in the academic staff of the Faculty of Orchestra, Music and Performing Arts. The BSO history begins with the concert performed by the Bilkent International Youth Symphony Orchestra in the Ankara Hippodrome. The idea to establish the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, originates from the First International Summer School in 1991 and subsequently from the International Youth Symphony Orchestra. The idea of establishing these orchestras belongs to Prof. Ersin Onay. Between years 1991-1992, the International Youth Orchestra was coming together and maintain their works in Bilkent every summer. Students from different parts of the world were being invited to this orchestra. In the Anatolian Music Festivals and events it implemented since the year it was founded in 1993, it cooperates with various institutions, organizations and particularly, with civil society organizations (cso). By making contribution to education, through selecting one child from each province it performed a concert in, it has ensured these children to receive education in the Preparatory School of the Bilkent University Music and Performing Arts Faculty.
