Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to determine the effect of using student-centered activity in social studies course on students’ academic achievement and students’ opinions towards the course. The study has been designed and applied according to mixed methods design in which qualitative and quantitative methods have used in common. In this context, while the dimension of academic achievement has been determined with the experimental research designed with the pre- test/posttest and control group, students’ opinions towards the course have been determined with openended question form. 56 seventh (7th) - grade students educating in primary school in Istanbul constitute the participants of the research. From the obtained findings of the research, in social studies course, it can be stated that student-based activities have had a positive effect on students’ academic achievement and have contributed to students to reach a more positive point of view towards the course.
