Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate faculty members’ views on Academy and academic culture. The basic qualitative research design is used in the study. The participants of the research include fifteen faculty members working at different public and private universities. Data were collected through interview form designed by the researcher based on the literature and peer review and content analysis was conducted. The participating faculty members perceived academia in an institutional base. They considered that academic culture in Turkey is education-instruction oriented and there are serious inadequacies in terms of scientific activities and contributions. Furthermore, they expressed that social responsibility is the most insufficient area of all. Besides, the participants highlighted that in an ideal academic culture, there should be a balance between education, scientific activity and contribution, and social responsibility and that academic freedom is the most essential criteria in an ideal academic culture.
