Abstract
Response styles that individuals have when responding to scales may cause a threat to validity, especially in international studies. In this sense, the aim of this study to examine response styles of students which participated in the PISA 2012 and to classify them according to their response styles. Extreme response style (ERS), acquiescent response style (ARS), and non-acquiescent response style (NARS) were investigated in this study. The sample of this study consisted of 32540 students from nine different countries. The criteria for selecting countries were the degree of being happy at school and success of the countries in PISA 2012. The response styles of the students were determined according to their responses given to Students Belonging to School and Attitude towards the School scales. One way analysis of variance and cluster analyses were performed in analyzing the data. According to the results of this study, Turkey, Colombia, Estonia and United Arab Emirates (Dubai) had a tendency to show more ERS. In addition to this, while Colombia, Indonesia, and United Arab Emirates had a tendency to display more ARS, Korea, Estonia, and Finland had a high tendency to show more NARS.
