    BEING AN ACADEMICIAN AT A FOUNDATION UNIVERSITY: ROUTINES AND THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT THOSE ROUTINES

  • Abstract
    The purpose of this study, which was conducted with a group of academicians working at a foundation university, is to explore the routines of the academicians and, the factors that affect those routines and to manifest the influence of the management strategies and practices unique to the foundation universities and the policies of HEC on academicians’ perceptions and experiences regarding their routines. In this sense, this study was designed as a basic qualitative research and the data were gathered from 19 academicians selected through maximum variation sampling. The data obtained from semi-structured interviews were analyzed through content analysis and four main themes were identified: perceived workload, working conditions of public and private universities, working conditions at the current university, and academic expectations. The results of the study revealed that academicians perceive their workload heavier than their counterparts in public universities due to the variety of courses taught, too many hours spent for teaching, and excessive time invested in the interaction with students. Additionally, the results showed that the retired professors who attained the highest rank are the most satisfied staff members with the current working conditions of the university. Finally, the results indicated that the university doesn’t provide favorable working conditions for research assistants and there is a need for a shift in the HEC’s role from direct intervention to a more regulatory one.
