Abstract
Metacognition strategies and science process skills are important factors in students’ learning. While metacognition strategies are an active factor in learning and problem solving, science process skills are important factors in students becoming active learners. The purpose of the present study is to identify the metacognition strategies of eighth grade students in solving questions of differing levels of difficulty, relevant to basic and higher science process skills. The study is a survey study intended to identify the metacognition strategies of eight grade students relevant to science process skills. The study sample consists of 122 8th grade students who attended three public schools in Ankara and Kahramanmaraş. Study results show that the metacognition strategies of students is above average, while there is no meaningful difference between the metacognition of male and female participants. Despite having above average metacognition strategies, students were found not to effectively use metacognition skills during the assessment at question level.
