Abstract
It is known that one’s genre awareness affects the reading comprehension and writing processes. In these processes, there is a need for further research on the awareness of Turkish language teachers about the structure of texts. In this sense, this study was designed to reveal the tendencies of pre-service Turkish language teachers regarding their conceptualizing the genres as well as the reasons that determined such trends. The study was carried out in a convergent mixed design where quantitative and qualitative data were collected and integrated accordingly. Participants were the undergraduate students studying at the Department of Turkish Language Education in Faculty of Education in three universities in Turkey (n=213). Closed-ended data collection process (multiple choice) to determine the genres and the open-ended data collection process, which included the reasons for the participants to determine the genre of the relevant text, were carried out simultaneously. Descriptive frequency analysis was performed for closed- ended data, whereas categorical analysis was implemented for the open-ended data. According to the findings, pre-service Turkish language teachers tended to conceptualize the news as a narrative or an explanatory text and the travel writing as a descriptive text. As for the personal narratives and essay text, they did not tend towards a single option and opted for the instructive, narrative, explanatory, descriptive or argumentative genre. As a result, it was found that most of the participants were not able to identify the distinctions related to the schematic structure of the texts, especially their genre awareness were low in genres of personal narrative and essay. Moreover, it was determined that they focused on micro-scale units when diagnosing the genre.
