Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine the teachers’ and students’ reasons for interaction on social media and the reasons for avoiding from interaction on the part on teachers in terms of hidden curriculum. To this end, a holistic multiple case study design was used in the research. Accordingly, 32 teachers and 29 students from 6 different middle schools located in Kahramanmaraş province were selected as the participants of the study during the 2016–2017 academic year. Analysis of the data obtained from the teachers and the students regarding the reasons for teacher-student interaction on social media in terms of hidden curriculum revealed that the teachers interact with their students on social media to teach them attitudes and values and build a good rapport. It has become clear that students also interact with their teachers on social media to get familiar with their teachers, to become a favorite student of the teacher and to learn more about their teachers. Teachers who do not interact with their students on the social media were found to be concerned about losing their authority at school and exhibiting negative examples for their students.
