TEACHERS’ VIEWS ON THE OCCUPATINONAL IMAGE OF TEACHING: A SCALE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH

Abstract
This mixed method research is a scale development and implementation study which aims to explore the occupational image of teaching. The aim of this research was to develop a valid and reliable scale, and to reveal the occupational image of teaching based on teachers’ views. The scale called “the occupational image scale of teaching” consists of five dimensions and 28 items. The scale explains the 54,9 % of the total variance and the Cranbach Alpha of the scale is ,813. The poplualtion includes 29 teachers (for the qualitative part) and 694 teachers (for the quantitative part). The results showed that the image of the teaching occupation is at moderate level. Although the occupational image is at a good level in the factors, “professional and personal characteristics”, “occupational attraction” and “status”, it is at low level in the factors “social perception” and “media”. In addition, the findings of the qualitative part of the study showed that the teachers think the image of teaching is not good and it is getting worse day by day. Based on these results, it is suggested to carry out practices to enhance the image of the occupation and the social perception.
