Abstract
In this study, the studies investigating the effect of laboratory applications based on modern approaches on students’ attitudes towards the laboratory were examined using the meta-analysis method. For this purpose, the literature review for the studies conducted in Turkey between 2000 and 2017 was made. As a result of literature review, a total of 20 studies including data appropriate for coding protocol and related to the effect of laboratory applications based on modern approaches on the students’ attitudes towards laboratory courses were included in the meta- analysis. In this study in which the total sample number was 1406, the moderator analysis was conducted in the publication types, scale types, science fields, application areas and experimental pattern types. All of the studies included in the study were found to have a positive effect size value. Effect size calculations of the studies, heterogeneity, publication bias and moderator analyses were performed using “Comprehensive Meta-Analysis” statistical program. The overall effect size value of modern laboratory approaches on the students’ attitudes towards the laboratory was determined as d=0.557 (95% CI, SE=0.090) in the confidence interval between 0.381 and 0.733 using random effects model. According to the classification made by Cohen, Manion, and Morrison (2007), laboratory applications based on modern approaches were found to affect students attitudes towards laboratory courses at a moderate level. As a result of the moderator analysis, no significant difference was found in terms of effect sizes, publication types, science fields studied, application areas, experimental pattern types and scale types.
